Varautuminen lintuinfluenssaa vastaan

So far, this year in China eight persons have been infected with Avian Influenza, five have died. As a reminder, I advise to take the following measures:

  • Wash your hands frequently!
  • Always wash dishes, chop sticks and cutlery with hot water and washing-up liquid (a small quantity is sufficient).
  • Wash the floors of the kitchen and other rooms with hot water and household cleaning agent.
  • Avoid contact with living or dead poultry (including feathers, dust and bird droppings). Avoid bird markets and keeping birds at home.
  • Flu viruses are killed by heat exceeding 70° C. Household disinfectants are also effective.
  • The consumption of properly cooked chicken meat or other poultry products is not known to have caused Avian Influenza.
  • If you do not want to abandon eating poultry or eggs you should observe the following rules:
    • Always wash your hands with care using hot soapy water, in particular after preparing chicken meat, duck meat or eggs.
    • Use separate dishes, cutting boards etc. as well as knives for meat (especially if raw) and vegetables.
    • After dealing with raw meat, always wash your hands, dishes, cutting boards, knives etc. with hot soapy water.
    • The temperature of the meat must reach at least 70° C throughout – do not serve or eat pink meat.
    • As egg shells can be contaminated with bird manure, take special care. Wash the eggs carefully and do not buy or use eggs which have bird manure on them or with cracked shells.
    • Do not eat raw or half cooked eggs.
    • Do not buy meat which is stained or bloody.
    • Do not buy meat which is particularly cheap; it could be from animals which have been ill and were culled.
    • Deep freezing does not kill the virus.

If you have symptoms resembling influenza the following measures are advisable:

    No tissue?
  • The secretion of mouth and nose contains large quantities of influenza viruses which should not be spread into the environment.
  • Take special care when dealing with children.
  • When you cough or sneeze, use a masque. If a masque is not available use a paper handkerchief. Dispose of it after use and teach your children to do so.
  • The Center for Diseases Control, Atlanta, USA recommends not to sneeze on your hand but on the inside of your arm, so called “Sleeve Sneeze”. In this way, viruses are not passed on by handshakes.
  • After contact with the secretion of mouth or nose wash your hands carefully with soapy water. As children tend to be negligent in this regard, try to explain the importance of this measure to them.
  • In case of an influenza-like illness with fever immediately consult a physician.
  • One of the most important measures is the influenza vaccination (flu jab) as a protection against seasonal influenza.
